Scott Gasaway grew up in Centerville, OH and is a 2006 graduate of Centerville High School. While he was a student at CHS, he was a member of the dynamic band program (under the direction of Wayne Markworth) participating as a member of the Centerville Jazz Band, concert bands, and jazz ensembles. He also performed in the pep band, musical productions and performed as a member of the Ohio Music Education Association All-State Jazz Band.
Since graduating from Centerville, Mr. Gasaway continued his path in music in Boston, MA at the prestigious Berklee College of Music where he was a recipient of the World Tour Scholarship and the Korg Endowed Scholarship studying and earning a bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a concentration in saxophone. He had the honor of studying under saxophonist Dino Govoni and saxophonist/clarinetist Shannon LeClaire. While in Boston, he performed and recorded with jazz, soul and funk bands all through the city. In addition to performing with these bands, he has had the honor of performing with Oscar Stagnaro, Victor Mendoza, Rob Parton, Rick VanMatre, Greg Abate, Gary Smulyan and Grammy nominated saxophonist Alex Han.
As an educator, Mr. Gasaway was the Band Director at Hull High School in Hull, MA from 2011-2012, where he started a band program from scratch. He then went on to become the Band Magnet Director at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton, OH from 2012-2018, where he directed bands in grades 7-12 and co-directed the Philharmonic Orchestra. During his tenure, the Wind Ensemble consistently earned superior ratings at Ohio Music Education Association adjudicated events, the Philharmonic Orchestra earned superior ratings at OMEA State and the Jazz Orchestra has participated in the Essentially Ellington competition, performed for TEDtalk events, performed at the OMEA Professional Development Conference in 2017, and opened for Motown legend, Smokey Robinson.
Mr. Gasaway is an active member of the Ohio Music Education Association and the National Association for Music Education. He is also a member of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Education Committee and enjoys discussing jazz in the community as a member of the Jazz Advocate board. He also enjoys teaching saxophone and performing with bands in southwest Ohio. Mr. Gasaway is grateful for where life has taken him and attributes his career in music and as an educator to the highly inspirational teachers and directors that he had the honor of being taught and mentored by. His foundations built in Centerville have come full-circle and he is honored to be continuing the tradition of excellence.
