The Centerville
Jazz Band
2003 Musical Program
2003 Theme:
Outside The Box
The 2002 Patterns in Jazz is a tough
act to follow, but for 2003 we will be exploring another fascinating
show theme that will keep you intrigued from week to week. We have
all heard the phrase "Think outside the box." We
hope to bring that concept to the marching band show in an interesting
blend of musical and visual ideas. The show is starting to take
shape as the writing and designing progressing and the band members are
learning the music, drill and routines.
The "Outside the Box" music is a very interesting piece of
music that is a little bit "out there" but a lot of fun.
It is a modern concert band piece, Bizarro by Michael
Daugherty. It is not really all that bizarre but named
after a comic book foe of Superman: Bizarro. In the composer's
own words, "Bizarro inhabits a musical world
without strings, and revels in the brash energies of rock and big band
jazz, propelled on his zany course by a fast tempo and rhythmic
excitement."
The show starts with Bizarro-Movement 1 - two minute version of the
beginning of the original piece. Tone clusters, crescendos,
decrescendos, and strong accents lead to a melodic statement first by
the trombones and then jazzed up by the saxophones. Then the
flutes and muted trumpets introduce the main "happy" theme that
is heard throughout the rest of the show. The second song is a
ballad entitled "Outside the Box", an original composition by
Andrew Markworth based on the motives of the original. It peaks
with a Kenton style lush ballad impact and then fades away. The
Bizarro Closer returns to the fast and furious pace of the opener and
goes through several variations including a jazz-rock big band shout
chorus. The show ends as one member put it, "a return to
reality", but don't be sure until you see it.
The staff is very excited about the creative possibilities of "thinking
outside the box" and developing another fantastic Centerville
show. We hope you enjoy it.
The
Centerville Jazz Band is Directed by Wayne Markworth with Assistant Directors Jodi Fairbanks, Tim Fairbanks, and Mike Voytek.
